Research:
Geochemistry and igneous petrology with emphasis on relations between volcanism and tectonic evolution of the western U.S. and volcanic arcs worldwide. Geochemistry of boron and boron isotopes.
Main research topics concern the origin of magmas and their relation to specific tectonic settings:
- Hot-spot related magmatism (e.g., Hawaii, Snake River Plain)
- Extension-related magmatism (e.g., Cordilleran U.S.)
- Subduction-related magmatism (e.g. Cascades range)
In particular, I have focused on the geochemistry of boron and other trace elements and their isotopes in understanding the origins of volcanic rocks, magmatic and other fluids, and borosilicate minerals.
